Omaha Forward Deng Mayar, 22, Drowns at Blackridge Reservoir in Utah

Police opened an investigation, with his friend expected to recover.

Overview

  • Officers responded to 911 calls around 5:40 p.m. Saturday reporting two swimmers in distress at Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah.
  • Sa Mafutaga, 21, reached shore, reentered to try to assist Mayar, and was treated and hospitalized; authorities said he is expected to recover.
  • Unified Fire Authority, South Jordan water rescue teams, and the Utah Highway Patrol dive team searched for hours using a submersible robot that located Mayar at 10:40 p.m., and divers recovered him around 11 p.m.
  • Omaha head coach Chris Crutchfield and North Dakota coach Paul Sather issued statements mourning Mayar, a graduate student who transferred to Omaha after two seasons at UND.
  • Herriman police said Mayar went underwater about 35 yards from shore; the case remains under investigation, and the reservoir, closed during the response, reopened Monday according to the city.
