Overview
- Officers responded to 911 calls around 5:40 p.m. Saturday reporting two swimmers in distress at Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah.
- Sa Mafutaga, 21, reached shore, reentered to try to assist Mayar, and was treated and hospitalized; authorities said he is expected to recover.
- Unified Fire Authority, South Jordan water rescue teams, and the Utah Highway Patrol dive team searched for hours using a submersible robot that located Mayar at 10:40 p.m., and divers recovered him around 11 p.m.
- Omaha head coach Chris Crutchfield and North Dakota coach Paul Sather issued statements mourning Mayar, a graduate student who transferred to Omaha after two seasons at UND.
- Herriman police said Mayar went underwater about 35 yards from shore; the case remains under investigation, and the reservoir, closed during the response, reopened Monday according to the city.
