Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, has burns covering over 75% of her body and is being treated in Eldoret, Kenya.
The attack occurred at Cheptegei's home in Trans Nzoia County following a quarrel with her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema.
Ndiema, who also sustained burns, is under investigation for the attack described as a domestic dispute.
Cheptegei had recently competed in the Paris Olympics, finishing 44th in the marathon.
