Gianmarco Tamberi was hospitalized for vomiting blood and severe kidney pain hours before the high jump final.
Despite his condition, Tamberi chose to compete and finished 11th with a jump of 2.22 meters.
Tamberi had been dealing with kidney issues and pain for several days leading up to the event.
He had previously won gold in the Tokyo Olympics, sharing the title with Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim.
Tamberi also made headlines earlier in the Games for losing his wedding ring during the opening ceremony.
