Olympic Future Uncertain as Boxing Association Splits and Defiantly Vows Reform

The International Boxing Association's president criticized national federations that formed a breakaway group seeking Olympic inclusion, calling them "black sheep" and "hyenas."
The new World Boxing federation formed to secure boxing's place in the Olympics, but the IOC suspended the IBA in 2019 over governance issues and has excluded it from organizing Olympic qualifiers and finals.
The IBA says it will update the IOC this week on reforms but still relies on sponsorship from Russian company Gazprom, a concern for the IOC.
The IBA president has promised champions up to $1 million in prizes, but the organization's finances are uncertain without Gazprom.
Boxing's status in the 2024 and 2028 Olympics remains unclear pending IBA reforms demanded by the IOC.
