Oliver Ruhnert Leaves Union Berlin After Mutual Agreement to Part Ways

Club leaders praised his role in lifting Union from the second tier to European competition.

Overview

  • Union Berlin announced Thursday that its cooperation with the 53-year-old has ended by mutual consent, with Ruhnert most recently serving as chief scout.
  • Ruhnert joined in 2017 as chief scout, became managing director for professional football in 2018, and oversaw promotion in 2019 and subsequent European qualifications, including the 2023/24 Champions League.
  • After a season in which Union narrowly avoided relegation, he moved back to the chief scout role following his tenure as managing director.
  • He paused his duties in January 2025 to campaign for the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht in the federal election, returned after the party failed to enter the Bundestag, and worked alongside successor Horst Heldt.
  • President Dirk Zingler credited Ruhnert with a key share in the club’s sporting progress, while Ruhnert called the period a life chapter filled with achievements few thought possible.
