Oliver Ruhnert Eyes Return to Union Berlin After Bundestag Election Defeat

The former Bundesliga manager is in talks to resume his role at the club following his unsuccessful political bid with the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht.

Oliver Ruhnert, former Union Berlin sports director and scout, is in discussions to rejoin the club after his Bundestag election loss.
Ruhnert ran as a candidate for the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht but failed to secure a seat, with his party narrowly missing the 5% threshold.
He had paused his role as Union Berlin's chief scout in January 2025 to focus on his political campaign, which yielded 8.6% of votes in his district, placing fifth out of eight candidates.
Ruhnert, who previously helped guide Union Berlin from the second division to the Champions League, has expressed his passion for returning to football.
His contract with Union Berlin, which was temporarily suspended during his political campaign, remains active until the end of February 2025.
