Oktoberfest Concludes After Closures and Bomb Threat

Officials say targeted entrance controls with reservation requirements protected visitors.

Overview

  • Entrances to the Theresienwiese were shut to new arrivals for about an hour on Oct. 3 around 17:00–18:00 because of overcrowding, with the press office citing roughly 300,000 people on the grounds.
  • A midweek bomb threat delayed opening for hours as police conducted a sweep with about 30 explosive-detection dogs and more than 500 officers before reopening around 17:30.
  • On Oct. 4 the main entrance was temporarily closed during the 16:00–18:00 reservation switch, with visitors directed to use side access points.
  • Fest tents and beer gardens were repeatedly closed to unreserved guests during peak changeovers to control density and reduce risk.
  • Organisers estimated about 3.5 million visitors by mid-festival and will present final attendance and incident figures today, noting crowds returned quickly after restrictions were lifted.
