Okinawa Stays Mostly Sunny as JMA Flags Typhoon Threat Near Ogasawara

The Japan Meteorological Agency warns Ogasawara of strong winds, large swells and sudden downpours through Oct. 6 due to a strengthening nearby depression.

Overview

  • Typhoon No. 21 remains east of the Philippines and is tracking west-northwest, feeding moist air toward the southern Ryukyu islands.
  • Okinawa is under a Pacific high with mostly sunny conditions on Oct. 4–5, though brief showers are expected in some areas.
  • The Sakishima region, including Miyako and Yaeyama, could see intermittent thunderstorms and locally heavy rain on Oct. 4.
  • Coastal waters will be choppy, with swells and somewhat high waves around the Sakishima islands and lighter wave action near Okinawa Main Island and the Daito islands.
  • The JMA says a tropical depression near the Ogasawara Islands is likely to intensify into a typhoon and move west, prompting cautions for strong winds, high waves with swells and sudden heavy rain through Oct. 6.
