Overview

  • The blaze ignited Wednesday afternoon near the Hawthorne Mountain area and drew support from Okanagan Falls volunteer firefighters and BC Wildfire Service air tankers.
  • Investigators suspect human activity sparked the fire, which was listed as ‘being held’ and contained to roughly four hectares by Thursday afternoon.
  • Flames threatened four buildings and came within 25 to 30 feet of a barn at See You Later Ranch, but no structures were damaged.
  • The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen elevated its response to a level-one event and imposed a temporary exclusion zone along Green Lake Road.
  • Crews have laid fire-retardant lines, are conducting night perimeter patrols and extinguishing hot spots as extremely dry backcountry conditions persist.
