Oilers Target Early November Return for Zach Hyman After Wrist Surgery

Camp evaluations will determine who fills his minutes with Connor McDavid.

Overview

  • Head coach Kris Knoblauch set a target around Nov. 1 for Hyman’s return, which projects to cost him roughly the first 12 games including the Oct. 8 opener against Calgary.
  • Hyman sustained a dislocated wrist in a May 27 collision with Dallas forward Mason Marchment, underwent surgery, and missed the final seven games of Edmonton’s playoff run including all six in the Stanley Cup Final.
  • Hyman said rehab has progressed well after two months in a cast, and he has shifted focus to rebuilding wrist strength following summer training.
  • Knoblauch cited Trent Frederic, David Tomasek, Andrew Mangiapane, Matt Savoie and Kasperi Kapanen as options for looks on the right side, with Tomasek and Mangiapane opening camp on McDavid’s wing.
  • The veteran winger logged 27 goals and 44 points in 73 games last season with major power-play usage, and he enters year five of an eight-year deal carrying a $5.5 million cap hit.
