Oil India Finds Gas in KG Basin's Matsyapuri Formation

Measured test flows and condensate point to a discovery that will undergo further zone testing to gauge commercial potential.

Overview

  • Oil India announced Friday that testing at the Godavari-1 appraisal well in the KG-DSF/GSKW/2018 block encountered natural gas in the previously unappraised Matsyapuri formation.
  • Production testing that began on October 16 produced sustained flows around 100,000 standard cubic metres per day and a recorded peak of 200,000 SCMD, with condensate at about 170 barrels per day.
  • The company is preparing to test a higher hydrocarbon-bearing zone in the same well to better define the find, and it has not released any reserve estimates or a timeline for commercial development.
  • The discovery sits inside the Discovered Small Field framework and comes as New Delhi is pushing state-backed offshore exploration programs to raise domestic gas supplies and lower import reliance.
  • If appraisal confirms larger volumes, the find could help ease India’s need for imported gas and LNG, but commercial impact will depend on further testing and development decisions by Oil India and regulators.
