Oil India Confirms Natural Gas in Andaman Well as Samples Test 87% Methane

Further testing will determine the origin, scale, commercial potential of the find.

  • Oil India reported an occurrence of natural gas in its Vijayapuram-2 exploratory well in Offshore Andaman Block AN-OSHP-2018/1 under the OALP program.
  • Initial production testing at 2,212–2,250 metres showed intermittent inflow with flaring, establishing the presence of gas.
  • Samples transported by ship to Kakinada were analyzed and found to contain about 87% methane, the petroleum minister said.
  • This marks the first reported hydrocarbon occurrence in the current Andaman shallow offshore exploration campaign, according to the company.
  • Oil India is conducting gas isotope studies and additional testing of higher-up prospects, with appraisal to assess pool size and viability under the National Deep Water Exploration Mission.
