Oil and Gas Industry Spent $14.4 Billion on Indigenous-Affiliated Firms From 2021 to 2023

The CAPP-commissioned study shows Indigenous vendors captured nearly one in five procurement dollars, signaling growing economic reconciliation.

Overview

  • Alberta projects accounted for $13.9 billion of the total spending, underscoring the province’s dominant role in Indigenous procurement.
  • Twelve major oil and gas companies did business with 585 Indigenous-affiliated enterprises across 110 municipalities and 45 Indigenous communities.
  • Construction vendors received the largest share of contracts, followed by environmental and industrial waste services and equipment maintenance providers.
  • Indigenous employees now represent 7% of the oil and gas workforce, nearly double the national average of just under 4%.
