OIC Establishes Ministerial Contact Group to De-escalate Israel-Iran Conflict

Rejecting U.S. participation in Israel’s strikes, the 57-member group urged accountability for attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites.

Overview

  • The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has set up a ministerial contact group in Istanbul to maintain dialogue with regional and international actors and support de-escalation measures.
  • In separate declarations, members condemned Israel’s aggression and U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities as breaches of international law.
  • The OIC called on Israel to accede to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and subject all its nuclear activities to IAEA safeguards.
  • Delegates reaffirmed Iran’s inherent right to self-defense against foreign attacks and quoted top diplomat Abbas Araghchi vowing retaliation by "all means necessary."
  • The security crisis began on June 13 when Israel struck Iran’s nuclear sites over proliferation concerns and escalated on June 22 after President Trump authorized U.S. support for the strikes.
