Overview
- The OIC Council of Foreign Ministers held its 22nd extraordinary session in Jeddah and passed two resolutions on Somalia/Somaliland and on Palestine.
- The Somalia-focused resolution rejected Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and international law.
- The OIC instructed member states and international bodies to refrain from any official or quasi-official dealings with Somaliland beyond Somalia’s federal framework.
- The organisation condemned a January 6 visit by an Israeli official to Somaliland and warned against any foreign military, security or intelligence presence in Somalia without Mogadishu’s consent.
- Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar called the move an act of “political aggression,” said Islamabad raised the issue at the UN Security Council, and warned of risks to Horn of Africa and Red Sea stability.
