Ohio Surgeon Indicted on Six Felonies in Alleged Forced Abortion Drug Case

His Ohio medical license is suspended pending a May 2026 hearing.

Overview

  • A Lucas County grand jury on Dec. 3 indicted Hassan-James Abbas, 32, on abduction, tampering with evidence, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, disrupting public services, identity fraud, and deception to obtain a dangerous drug.
  • Investigators say he crushed abortion medication and forced it into his pregnant girlfriend’s mouth as she slept in December 2024, after which she called 911 and sought emergency treatment.
  • The State Medical Board alleges he ordered the pills from an out-of-state telemedicine provider using his estranged wife’s information without her consent.
  • Ohio regulators summarily suspended his license on Nov. 5, finding clear and convincing evidence that his continued practice poses an immediate and serious danger to the public, with a disciplinary hearing set for May 14–15, 2026.
  • Abbas is scheduled for arraignment on Dec. 19, and the University of Toledo says he has been placed on administrative leave following the suspension.
