Ohio Republicans Challenge Voter-Backed Abortion Rights Amendment
Despite opposition, some top Republicans uphold democratic processes and stand up for voters.
- Ohio voters recently passed an amendment enshrining the right to abortion in the state constitution, with a majority of 57% to 43%.
- In response, a group of Republican lawmakers, including Ohio state Rep. Jennifer Gross, vowed to block the amendment from reversing Ohio’s existing abortion restrictions.
- Gross and three fellow Republicans proposed legislation to prevent Ohio courts from interpreting any cases related to the abortion-rights amendment, known as Issue 1.
- Similar efforts to limit the power of state courts have emerged in six other states since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
- Despite these efforts, some top Republicans in Ohio, including GOP Gov. Mike DeWine and Republican Attorney General Dave Yost, are rejecting anti-democratic suggestions and standing up for voters.
