Ohio Rep. Bill Johnson to Retire from Congress, Accepts Presidency of Youngstown State University

Johnson will continue to serve his term, focusing on tax exemption legislation and a broader rail safety bill, before assuming his new role.

  • Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, announced he will not seek an 8th term in Congress, accepting a new role as president of Youngstown State University.
  • Johnson will serve out the remainder of his term representing Ohio's 6th district, continuing to work on his agenda, including tax exemption legislation for East Palestine, Ohio, and a broader rail safety bill.
  • The offer to run the university was made by the board of trustees in an 8-1 vote earlier this month.
  • Johnson was first elected to Congress in 2010 and was one of 126 Republicans who signed the congressional amicus brief in support of overturning the 2020 election, which was rejected by the Supreme Court.
  • The filing deadline for congressional candidates to submit signed petitions to run in party primaries for the two-year term that starts January 2025 is Dec. 20, and the primary election will be held in Ohio on March 19.
