Overview
- State lawmakers failed to pass a bipartisan map by the Sept. 30 constitutional deadline, and Republicans did not introduce any proposal.
- The seven-member commission must approve a plan by Oct. 31 with at least four votes, including two Democrats, or the process returns to the legislature for potential simple-majority approval in November.
- Democratic leaders Nickie Antonio and Dani Isaacsohn urged Gov. Mike DeWine to convene the commission immediately, and his office noted the request without comment.
- House Speaker Matt Huffman defended withholding a draft, saying, “I don’t think introducing a map accomplishes something,” and indicated a Republican map might appear later this month.
- Democrats submitted the only public plan, designed for an 8–7 Republican edge consistent with recent statewide voting, while GOP leaders have indicated they want at least 12 of the 15 seats.
