Overview

  • State law waives all state, county and local sales taxes on most tangible personal property priced $500 or less, covering items from electronics and clothing to kitchenware, sporting goods and musical instruments.
  • Exemptions do not apply to vehicles, watercraft, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, vapor products or items containing marijuana.
  • Orders placed and paid for by mail, phone, email or online during the holiday remain tax-free even if delivery or pickup occurs afterward, and qualifying layaway purchases are also exempt.
  • Store coupons and loyalty discounts can reduce item prices to $500 or less for eligibility, but manufacturer coupons and rebates are excluded from price reductions.
  • Local economists and retailers expect computers, tablets and other electronics to top back-to-school shopping lists during the tax-free window.
