Ohio Historical Society Nears Control of Ancient Tribal Site

A trial will determine the compensation owed for the Hopewell Earthworks, currently a golf course.

The Ohio History Connection is close to reclaiming the 2,000-year-old Octagon Earthworks in Newark.
The site, used as a golf course, is part of the Hopewell Earthworks system, a World Heritage Site.
A 2019 ruling allowed the historical society to reclaim the lease via eminent domain.
The trial will decide the amount the historical society must pay to the Moundbuilders Country Club.
Numerous tribes support preserving the earthworks as examples of Indigenous achievements.
