Officials Report Steep Declines in Homicides in Guerrero at Acapulco Briefing

Officials attributed the drop to a coordinated security plan.

Overview

  • At a January 9 La Mañanera del Pueblo held in Acapulco, President Claudia Sheinbaum and state leaders presented December 2025 security results for Guerrero and the port city.
  • Sheinbaum said average daily intentional homicides fell from 6.58 to 2.32 in Guerrero from October 2024 to December 2025, and from 2.32 to 0.68 in Acapulco from September 2024 to December 2025.
  • Governor Evelyn Salgado reported 1,312 homicides in 2025, the state’s lowest annual total since 2009, with December 2025 the lowest monthly incidence in a decade.
  • Officials credited a strategy focused on root causes, strengthened federal forces, intelligence and investigation, and coordination with the state, with Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch citing arrests, major drug seizures and lab dismantlements nationally.
  • Evelyn Salgado highlighted Acapulco’s recovery with hotel occupancy reaching 98.4 percent, while federal agencies outlined water-system repairs and road and bridge works under an infrastructure program in Guerrero.
