Officials Outline Terror, Hate-Crime Probe After Minneapolis Church Shooting That Killed 2 Children

Investigators cite writings expressing sweeping hatred with praise for mass killers, leading them to classify the attack as domestic terrorism and a hate crime.

Overview

  • Police identified one victim as 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel, as officials said a 10-year-old child was also killed during the back-to-school Mass at Annunciation Catholic Church.
  • Authorities said 18 people were injured, including 15 children ages 6 to 15 and three parishioners in their 80s, with one child in critical condition and several others still hospitalized.
  • The shooter, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, fired about 116 rifle rounds through stained-glass windows, also discharging three shotgun shells while a handgun appeared to malfunction, before dying by suicide outside.
  • Search warrants at the church and three residences in Minneapolis, Richfield and St. Louis Park yielded hundreds of pieces of evidence, including videos and writings that officials say expressed hate toward many groups and admiration for mass murderers.
  • Investigators said the firearms were legally purchased; Westman once attended the school, and videos showed weapons scrawled with phrases such as “Where is your God?” and references to past mass shooters.
