Officials Cut Ribbon on Calder Gardens in Philadelphia Ahead of Sunday Opening

The new Herzog & de Meuron building set within Piet Oudolf’s 1.8-acre landscape will present rotating Calder works in a contemplative, label-free setting.

Overview

  • Public festivities begin with a free parade on September 20 at noon from LOVE Park to Maja Park, where the Sun Ra Arkestra performs at 1 p.m., followed by the public opening on September 21.
  • The site at 2100 Benjamin Franklin Parkway spans 1.8 acres with an 18,000-square-foot building whose primary galleries are below ground and framed by more than 250 plant species.
  • Calder works will be shown in unscheduled rotation without wall labels, complemented by programs such as silent days, commissioned audio walks, and seasonal listening circles with Lenape tribal members.
  • Administration is handled by the Barnes Foundation in collaboration with the Calder Foundation on city-leased land for 99 years, with Pennsylvania contributing $20 million toward a project reported at $70–$90 million.
  • Designed as a quiet counterpoint to neighboring Parkway institutions, the space emphasizes reflection over didactic interpretation and will regularly change both its displays and seasonal gardens.
