Officer to Face Gross-Misconduct Hearing After Ely E-Bike Deaths, Watchdog Says

The watchdog says a disciplinary panel could find he gave inaccurate accounts after the crash.

Overview

  • The IOPC found no indication the police van made contact with the boys’ e-bike and said CCTV showed the van was on a different road about half a mile away at the moment of the collision.
  • The officer has a case to answer for gross misconduct over the accuracy of information he provided to colleagues, potentially breaching honesty and integrity standards.
  • The watchdog also says he has a misconduct case to answer over his driving and language at the scene, with driving potentially outside his training and contrary to College of Policing guidance.
  • The CPS previously decided not to bring criminal charges and the families have triggered a Victims’ Right to Review of that decision.
  • Separate court cases from the subsequent disorder continue, with Harvey James, 19, pleading guilty to rioting and sentencing set for December 22 as other trials are listed to start on September 22.
