Officer Shot in Vest During Morgan Park Disturbance, Teen and Suspect Also Wounded

COPA has opened a use-of-force investigation with the involved officers on 30-day administrative duty.

Overview

  • Officers from the 22nd District responded around 12:54 a.m. to the 11400 block of South Davol Street after 911 reports of a neighbor with a gun and a broken door.
  • As police tried to separate a 35-year-old man and an 18-year-old, the older man's gun discharged, hitting the teen and an officer in the chest.
  • The officer’s protective vest stopped the round, and a second officer returned fire, striking the 35-year-old and unintentionally wounding the teen again.
  • The teen was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and the 35-year-old to Advocate Christ Medical Center, both listed in fair condition.
  • The officer was treated and released, and COPA and CPD’s Investigative Response Team are examining the shooting while COPA requests tips from the public.
