Off-Duty US Park Police Officer Fatally Shoots Colleague in Accidental Discharge, Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter

Off-duty US Park Officer, Alexander Roy was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter on November 5, 2023, over the fatal shooting of fellow officer Jesse Brown Hernandez in a McLean, Virginia, apartment.
The shooting occurred around 12:20 a.m. when Roy, under the influence of alcohol, was handling a firearm he believed to be unloaded.
At the time of the shooting, out of the four individuals present in the apartment, three were off-duty US Park Police officers.
Fairfax County Police responded to a 911 call about an accidental shooting and found Hernandez dead on arrival.
Roy was allegedly 'dry firing' the weapon, a term used for simulating the discharge of an unloaded firearm by pulling the trigger.
Roy is being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center; the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
