Off-Duty N.C. Paramedic Killed After Stopping to Help on I-95 in Florida

Troopers are investigating a five-vehicle chain reaction in Brevard County that left two people dead.

Overview

  • Gaston County EMS identified the paramedic as 27-year-old Mary Jolly, who stopped with her wife to render aid and was struck in the center lane by a Nissan Murano.
  • Jolly was airlifted to HCA Lake Monroe Hospital and died two days after the early Nov. 15 crash, according to officials and local reports.
  • The sequence began when a 33-year-old Port St. Lucie man driving a 2019 Chevy Impala changed lanes and hit a Volkswagen, leaving the Impala disabled in the inside northbound lane.
  • A Hyundai Elantra then hit the disabled Impala and its driver, who was also struck by an Audi A4 and pronounced dead at the scene, Florida Highway Patrol said.
  • FHP reports that all involved drivers remained at the scene and that the investigation is ongoing, as colleagues in North Carolina publicly mourn Jolly’s service since 2021, including a 2023 award and swift-water rescue team role.
