Off-Duty N.C. Paramedic Dies After Stopping to Help at I-95 Crash in Florida

Troopers are investigating after Mary Jolly was struck by an SUV while rendering aid at the scene.

Overview

  • FHP says the chain reaction began just after midnight Nov. 15 on northbound I-95 near State Road 46 when a Chevrolet Impala moved into a Volkswagen’s path.
  • After the Impala came to rest in a travel lane, its driver exited and was struck by a Hyundai Elantra and then by an Audi A4, and he died at the scene, according to troopers.
  • Traveling with her wife, paramedic Mary Jolly stopped to assist and was hit in the center lane by a Nissan Murano as both she and that driver tried to avoid each other, FHP reported.
  • Jolly was airlifted to a Florida hospital and died Monday morning, with Gaston County EMS confirming her death and citing a time of 11:05 a.m.
  • Authorities said all involved drivers remained on scene and the investigation is ongoing, while colleagues noted Jolly joined Gaston County EMS in 2021 and earned a 2023 B-Shift Outstanding Paramedic award.
