Odisha Vigilance seizes over ₹2.5 crore in raids on chief engineer’s properties

Officials have launched detailed asset valuations and audits ahead of his retirement

Overview

  • On May 30, Odisha Vigilance raided seven properties linked to Chief Engineer Baikuntha Nath Sarangi and seized between ₹2.1 crore and ₹2.52 crore in cash.
  • Sarangi threw bundles of ₹500 notes from his Bhubaneswar flat window when officers arrived, and all the thrown cash was recovered in the presence of witnesses.
  • Beyond cash, officials uncovered two double-storeyed houses in Angul, flats in Bhubaneswar and Puri, and seven land plots on the outskirts of both cities.
  • Financial forensics revealed equity investments worth ₹2.7 crore, bank and insurance deposits totalling ₹1.5 crore, and a family locker at an Axis Bank branch in Angul.
  • A 26-officer team—including eight DSPs, 12 Inspectors and six ASIs—led the operation and has begun property valuations and project-approval audits as the probe continues.
