Odisha Unveils First Asian Elephant Survival Centre Near Chandaka at Global Workshop

The centre is envisioned as a regional hub linking science with on-the-ground mitigation across South and Southeast Asia.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced the Centre for Species Survival – Asian Elephant to be set up near the Chandaka Wildlife Division outside Bhubaneswar.
  • The initiative is being developed with the IUCN Species Survival Commission, Wildlife Trust of India and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
  • An international workshop on human–elephant coexistence opened in Bhubaneswar with more than 150 delegates from Asian range countries and Indian states.
  • Odisha detailed ongoing measures including GPS and radio collars, AI cameras, drones, rapid-response teams, dedicated elephant squads, corridor mapping, forest restoration, water bodies in forests and faster compensation.
  • Officials and experts including Heidi Riddle, Adam Felts and Project Elephant director Ramesh Kumar Pandey addressed sessions as technical deliberations continued.
