Odisha Shutters Fertiliser Shops, Suspends Dealers as Urea Protests Grow

The government cites fresh stock data plus enforcement as proof of adequate supply.

Overview

  • Odisha reported total fertiliser availability of 11.04 lakh metric tonnes with 8.46 lakh MT sold, 2.56 lakh MT in districts, and 11,692 MT of urea in transit after a 9.55 lakh MT central allocation with 8.10 lakh MT received.
  • State enforcement teams sealed 30 shops, suspended 62 dealer licences, inspected 4,546 outlets, issued 1,202 show-cause notices, and seized stock from six dealers to curb black marketing and fake fertiliser sales.
  • Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik asked Union Minister J. P. Nadda to ensure additional urea for Odisha, warning of disrupted Kharif operations and alleging hoarding, adulteration, and diversion by distribution agency MARKFED.
  • Farmer agitations continued in districts such as Malkangiri where a blockade on NH-326 followed long queues and complaints that subsidised urea was unavailable at approved prices.
  • Shortages remained a wider concern with Andhra Pradesh farm groups and officials citing about a 40% gap in urea and Telangana reporting tense protests, including a suicide attempt at a PACS office in Wanaparthy.
