Odisha Police Arrest Ex-Boyfriend in Student’s Self-Immolation Case

Investigators are reviewing digital evidence to establish if online blackmail or an alleged honor killing prompted the student's self-immolation.

Overview

  • Pramod Behera was booked on August 10 under Sections 108 (abetment to suicide), 75 (sexual harassment), 78 (stalking) and 296 (obscene act) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with IT Act sections 66-E and 67-A.
  • Kendrapara SP Siddharth Kataria said forensic analysis of Behera’s phone uncovered about 60 intimate videos, including clips sent to the victim’s father in mid-July and messages exchanged on the morning of her death.
  • The Pattamundai (Rural) Police Station transferred ASI Saliendra Mohan Palei after it emerged he ignored the student’s harassment complaint filed six months prior.
  • Behera’s mother and sister deny the blackmail allegations and allege that the victim’s father carried out an honor killing, leading police to also question her father and brother.
  • Authorities are awaiting post-mortem and further forensic reports to determine whether the 19-year-old’s death was self-inflicted or involved foul play.
