Odisha Moves to Resolve Land Hurdles as Centre Sets 9.8 MTPA Rourkela Expansion Target

State–centre committees will tackle land acquisition hurdles to keep the expansion moving.

Overview

  • Union minister H D Kumaraswamy announced a plan to raise Rourkela Steel Plant capacity to about 9.8 MTPA by 2030 with an estimated investment of roughly Rs 30,000 crore.
  • A separate modernisation programme of about Rs 9,000 crore is being taken up to keep the plant competitive and future‑ready.
  • Odisha will set up a high‑level panel led by an Additional Chief Secretary–rank officer to resolve land acquisition through consultations with around 300 affected families.
  • The minister inaugurated a 1 MTPA slab caster built for about Rs 1,100 crore and reviewed work on a new coke oven battery and pellet plant.
  • Outstanding clearances include transfer of 200 acres for the Rourkela airport, with SAIL directed to coordinate with the Civil Aviation Ministry.
