Overview
- A low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal strengthened on Sunday and the India Meteorological Department issued red warnings for Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur while forecasting very heavy rain through August 24–26.
- Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi recorded 345 mm and Kashipur in Rayagada 212 mm in a 24-hour period, producing swollen rivers and a heightened flash-flood risk across multiple districts.
- Officers released 412 cusecs from the Mangalpur Barrage into the Indravati/Hati River when the river was already in spate, triggering flash floods in Hati River embankments, local road disruptions and the rescue of 293 people.
- State and district administrations have closed schools and anganwadis in vulnerable areas, opened medical relief centres, deployed rapid response and mobile health teams, and reported cases of acute diarrhoeal disease and snake-bites.
- Officials warned fishermen not to venture into the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal until August 24 and advised residents to expect continued waterlogging, river flooding and possible downstream inundation as the system moves northwest into Gangetic West Bengal.
