Odisha Assembly Passes Four Bills Tripling Lawmakers’ Pay

Officials cite inflation, parity with other states and an advisory panel recommendation for the retroactive changes.

Overview

  • An ordinary MLA’s monthly package rises to about Rs 3.45 lakh from roughly Rs 1.11 lakh, with basic pay set at Rs 90,000 and larger specified allowances.
  • The increases take effect from June 2024, the start of the 17th Assembly, after unanimous support across party lines.
  • The Chief Minister’s package is fixed at about Rs 3.74 lakh, while the Speaker, ministers and other leaders will receive roughly Rs 3.50–3.68 lakh, placing Odisha among the highest in India.
  • Pensions for former MLAs move to around Rs 1.17 lakh per month, including medical and travel components, with an additional Rs 3,000 per extra term.
  • The four amendment bills add Rs 25 lakh assistance to a sitting MLA’s family in case of death, mandate reviews every five years, and allow future hikes via ordinance.
