ODAIT Reports Evidence of Second Burial Ground at Tuam as Four More Infant Remains Recovered

Initial assessments point to coffined infant burials, with forensic testing now in progress.

Overview

  • ODAIT says graves of child or infant size were found about 100 metres from the previously examined memorial garden area.
  • The layout and location match a section labeled “burial ground” in historical documents despite no surface indications before excavation.
  • Four additional sets of remains were recovered in the newly identified area, bringing total recoveries to 11 during the current intervention.
  • Initial assessments indicate all recovered individuals are infants buried in coffins, and full forensic analysis is underway.
  • Excavations proceed section by section as ODAIT notes two centuries of changing site use complicate interpretation, and at least 160 people have offered DNA to aid identification.
