October Sky Guide: Harvest Supermoon, Orionids Peak, and Comet Highlights

A new moon on Oct. 21 sets dark-sky conditions for the Orionid meteor display.

Overview

  • The first supermoon of 2025—the Harvest Moon—arrives Oct. 6–7, with the full phase on Oct. 7 as calculated by Time and Date.
  • The Orionids, tied to Halley’s Comet, are forecast to peak around Oct. 20–23 with roughly 20 meteors per hour in ideal skies and best viewing after midnight.
  • NASA’s International Observe the Moon Night is scheduled for Oct. 4, with participants able to download a personalized certificate.
  • Comet activity includes C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) at perihelion on Oct. 8, C/2025 R2 (SWAN) near perigee on Oct. 19, C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) at perigee on Oct. 21, and interstellar 3I/ATLAS at perihelion on Oct. 29.
  • Other October targets include Ceres at opposition on Oct. 2 and Mercury at maximum evening elongation on Oct. 29, alongside several Moon–planet conjunctions throughout the month.
