October Closures Sweep UK High Street as NatWest and Major Retailers Shut Sites

The wave comes as researchers forecast more than 17,000 shop closures in 2025.

Overview

  • NatWest will close 20 branches throughout October, citing that more than 80% of current‑account customers now bank online.
  • Poundland continues its restructuring under new owner Gordon Brothers, with October shutdowns including Liscard on October 1, Lowestoft on October 10, Livingston on October 12 and Tenby on October 18.
  • Halifax will close its Camborne, Cornwall branch on October 7, with larger rounds of closures slated for early 2026.
  • Additional retailer exits include New Look’s Potteries Centre store on October 14, Sports Direct in Rhyl during October, Trespass in Watford on October 31 and Original Factory Shop sites on October 11 and 12.
  • Retailers attribute the closures to rising energy, rent, tax and wage costs alongside a sustained shift to online shopping that has reduced town‑centre footfall.
