Obsidian Changes Free Next‑Gen Upgrade for The Outer Worlds

Platform entitlement rules now require digital Xbox One and PS4 owners to hold both expansions to qualify for the free PS5 and Series X|S upgrade.

Overview

  • Obsidian consolidated the game into The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition and updated the Xbox Series X|S Game Pass build after replacing older storefront listings with the remaster.
  • The studio confirmed saves from the original base game will carry forward into Spacer’s Choice Edition but warned that new features may break compatibility if players revert to the old build.
  • Obsidian revised its original free-upgrade promise on May 28 to say digital Xbox One and PS4 owners must own both DLCs (Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos) to receive the free PS5/Series upgrade because of console entitlement limits.
  • The developer apologised for the change, asked anyone who bought the game between April 30 and May 27 to contact Obsidian Support for remediation, and said it will work with affected purchasers.
  • Obsidian is investigating possible upgrade solutions for owners of physical discs and the issue highlights how console entitlement and licensing systems can block simple digital upgrades unless expansions are tied to a single entitlement.
