OBRIA NANO Test Satellite Becomes Operational in Orbit
The Ukrainian-run demonstrator will run in-orbit tests to guide development of a future sovereign satellite communications network.
Overview
- HIMERA and GomSpace confirmed that OBRIA NANO is operating in low Earth orbit and is performing planned technical tests.
- The satellite, which launched on SpaceX’s Transporter‑18 on Oct. 1, 2026, will collect data to inform the design of a larger Ukrainian constellation.
- HIMERA says the satellite is under Ukrainian control and is intended to reduce Kyiv’s reliance on foreign communications during wartime.
- The project is a partnership between Ukrainian developer HIMERA and Danish supplier GomSpace using small-satellite and rideshare launch methods to speed access to space.
- Longer-term plans call for localizing production of satellites and ground terminals in Ukraine and for a national network that complements European systems to boost resilience and battlefield communications.
