Obon Air Travel Rebounds With Double-Digit Gains at Narita, Haneda and Centrair

The new counts point to a quicker return to pre-pandemic levels for foreign travelers than for Japanese departures.

  • Official Aug. 8–17 tallies show Narita handled 991,430 international entries and exits, up 12.1% year over year.
  • Haneda recorded 675,180 international travelers, an 11.3% annual increase, with the United States the leading outbound destination.
  • Chubu Centrair processed 176,690 international passengers, rising 17% from a year earlier to 80.2% of its 2019 level.
  • At Centrair, foreign traveler volumes recovered to 92.9% of 2019 compared with 70.1% for Japanese nationals.
  • Destination patterns were concentrated in nearby markets: South Korea ranked first at Narita and Centrair, while Haneda skewed toward the United States and China.
