Oakville Theatre Hit by Arson and Gunfire Halts South Asian Film Screenings

Police are investigating targeted overnight attacks that prompted the cinema to suspend South Asian titles for safety.

Overview

  • Halton police say Film.ca Cinemas in Oakville was struck by an attempted arson on Sept. 25 and a separate shooting around 1:50 a.m. on Oct. 2, with no injuries reported.
  • Following the second incident, the theatre pulled upcoming screenings of Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 and They Call Him OG and paused all South Asian films indefinitely.
  • Investigators released suspect details, describing two masked individuals in the arson case and a dark‑skinned male with a heavy build in the shooting, and urged the public to provide tips.
  • The cinema remains open and says the decision is precautionary, citing indications the incidents are linked to its South Asian programming, though police have not confirmed a motive.
  • At least one other exhibitor, York Cinemas, has also paused Indian film showings as reports note similar incidents at theatres elsewhere in the Greater Toronto Area and British Columbia.
