Oakland Street Renamed 'Tupac Shakur Way' in Honor of Late Rapper

Street Section Renamed Includes Stretch of MacArthur Boulevard Where Shakur Lived, Coincides with Plea of Not Guilty in Shakur’s Murder Case from 1996 Shooter Duane Davis.

Tupac Shakur has been honored in Oakland, California, with street renaming — the section of MacArthur Boulevard where he once lived is now 'Tupac Shakur Way'.
The renaming ceremony was attended by family members, including Shakur’s sister Sekyiwa 'Set' Shakur, and renowned artists such as MC Hammer and Money B.
Artists at the event praised Shakur, hailing him as 'the greatest rapper ever', highlighting his advocacy for his community, and expressing hopes that his spirit will continue to inspire safety and peace in the community.
Despite being born in Harlem and growing up in Baltimore, Shakur embraced Oakland as his adopted hometown after moving there in the late 1980s. City Councilwoman Carroll Fife, who led the effort to rename the street, stated Shakur 'claimed Oakland' and it 'gave him his game'.
The street renaming took place a day after the man charged with Shakur's murder, Duane 'Keefe D' Davis, pleaded not guilty. This is the first time anyone has been charged in connection with the 1996 shooting.
