Oakland Sets 18 Speed Cameras for Mid-January Rollout, Tickets After 60-Day Warning

The state AB 645 pilot concentrates enforcement on High Injury Network streets to reduce severe crashes.

Overview

  • Installation at 18 corridors will wrap by mid-January, with a 60-day warning period starting after the final camera is activated.
  • Cameras cite drivers exceeding the limit by more than 11 mph, using plate-only images reviewed by city staff before fines of $50–$500.
  • Tickets are expected to begin in March following the warning phase, with 50%–80% reductions available for drivers who cannot pay.
  • Locations come from the High Injury Network, the 8% of streets linked to roughly 60% of Oakland’s severe and fatal crashes.
  • Oakland is the second California city to deploy speed cameras under AB 645, with sites in downtown, West Oakland, Fruitvale, Glenview and along Hegenberger, excluding the hills and the Coliseum area.
