Oakland Police Investigate Two New Year’s Day Fatal Shootings, One Arrest Made

The Homicide Division is leading both cases with names withheld pending family notification.

  • Officers responded around 11 a.m. to the 2700 block of East 20th Street after a ShotSpotter alert and found a man with gunshot wounds.
  • Paramedics took the East 20th victim, a Berkeley man, to a hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 3 p.m.
  • Around 1:30 p.m., officers found a second male victim on the 4500 block of Market Street in North Oakland who was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Police arrested one man following the Market Street shooting, and neither the suspect’s nor the victims’ names have been released.
  • City data show Oakland homicides have been trending down, with 86 in 2024 and 66 in 2025 through Dec. 28.
