  • The deceased pedestrian was identified as Dr. Marvin Boomer, a Castlemont High math teacher and pathway coach, whose community held a candlelight vigil in his honor.
  • Eighteen-year-old Eric Hernandez Garcia ran from the scene but was arrested and faces charges including felony vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run and evading police.
  • A female pedestrian involved survived with injuries and remains in stable condition, with separate investigations by CHP and Oakland police now underway.
  • Governor Gavin Newsom and the Oakland Police Commission are debating whether to relax pursuit restrictions after a 9th Circuit ruling held officers liable for bystander deaths during reckless chases.
