Overview

• Before dawn Wednesday, suspects in a U-Haul struck Sterling Bank at 8th and Webster and then Cathay Bank at 7th and Webster in Oakland’s Chinatown.
• The ATM at Sterling Bank was dislodged and possibly stolen, and police found the U-Haul abandoned with a chain still attached.
• No arrests have been announced, and police say they are pursuing leads in coordination with federal investigators and regional partners.
• Both banks remained closed and boarded on Thursday with private security posted, and the Chinatown chamber said it has set up emergency funds for affected businesses.
• At a community meeting, leaders pressed for more police resources and protective measures as the police union cited only 515 active officers, and hours after the rammings a woman was robbed near a Bank of America ATM by Lake Merritt.
