Oakland and San Francisco Experience Violent New Year’s Eve with Four Fatalities

Three homicides occurred in Oakland and one in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve, marking a grim end to 2024 despite significant drops in citywide killings last year.

  • Oakland recorded three separate homicides on New Year’s Eve, including two shootings and a fatal stabbing, bringing the city’s 2024 homicide total to 86, down from 126 in 2023.
  • A quadruple shooting near Jack London Square around 10:20 p.m. left one man dead and three others injured; the victims were reportedly planning to attend a local event.
  • Earlier in the day, a 32-year-old man was fatally shot outside his workplace in West Oakland at 7:15 a.m., and another man was stabbed to death after an altercation in East Oakland around 7:45 p.m.
  • San Francisco police are investigating a New Year’s Eve homicide involving a traumatic injury at a gas station on 17th Street and Van Ness Boulevard just after midnight.
  • Oakland’s first homicide of 2025 occurred early New Year’s Day, with a 46-year-old man shot dead outside his East Oakland home at 3:13 a.m.; no suspects have been identified in any of the cases.
