Oakland 911 System Down, Alameda County Handling Calls

City IT is working with AT&T to restore phone, internet and dispatch systems.

Overview

  • Oakland dispatchers saw the Computer-Aided Dispatch system freeze Wednesday night and phone and internet lines went out, prompting an automatic reroute of 911 calls to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
  • All incoming 911 calls are being answered by Alameda County and then relayed to Oakland personnel who have been moved into dispatch centers at the Oakland Fire Department and the county dispatch center.
  • Oakland Police are restricting responses to Priority One incidents only, while fire dispatchers continue to handle all fire and medical calls.
  • The city’s OAK311 non-emergency system is offline and officials have asked residents to email OAK311@oaklandca.gov for non-urgent reports and to call 911 only for true emergencies.
  • City IT is working with AT&T to restore services and officials have not identified a cause, and similar 911 disruptions were reported in other California counties earlier Thursday, suggesting a broader telecom or routing issue is under review.
